Keeping a morning journal
- writing
- habits
- creativity
I’ve started writing a morning journal. You know how my AuDHD brain works—if something isn’t simple or can be done in comfort, my ADD and autism start a fight (and the ADD stands victorious much too often) and nothing gets done. So, I’m trying new routines (again). Easy ones this time, ones that might actually stick.
A friend of mine, @natalie.forslind, mentioned morning journaling in one of her Instagram reels (or it could have been on TikTok, I don’t remember), and it sounded interesting enough that I looked it up. Turns out the whole thing is basically writing four pages by hand first thing in the morning. It doesn’t matter what it’s about—whatever’s in your head when you wake up, whatever you feel, or whatever (nonsense) comes into your mind right then. Some people call it a kind of meditation, or a way to get your brain moving creatively. I can see why. This is only day three for me, but it already seems like it could work for me.
Apparently, the whole idea comes from Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way. I haven’t read it (my TBR is already a crime scene), but everyone seems to swear by this routine. I’m giving it a shot and seeing where it goes. But I guess that some days four pages will seem a lot, like today, but I’ll keep it up and evaluate in a few weeks.
On another, more important note, and due to the aforementioned ADD, my writing on The Autumn Arcanum has been stalled. I am, however, slowly getting back on track. I’m about a year behind on finishing my first draft of it, but who cares—I’m still writing it.
